Since space is limited where can you store such things. Also my husband isn't much better off than me so getting in and out of our motor home is a chore. We are not made of money so what to do? Would love to buy a custom motor home but again the issue of money and do they even make a handicap accessable one? The other concern we have is that we travel with two JRT's and I wondered if a small kennel can be built in sort of like the doggie door in our house so they can come and go and yet the door can be locked from the inside when needed. How much space would something like this take up? And could they be contained in it when we go to bed? Right now they sleep with us but I would like to get away from that. More questions to follow...Big dreams no money lol.

Glint, welcome to RV dreams, not sure what your budget is our what type of RV you are interested in but i would definately consider a Toy Hauler. TH can be purchased in Travel Trailers or Motor Homes, you guys can use the garage for your JRT and walkers or scooters. These sometime large garages have beds that drop out of the cieling and ramp doors that you can easily navigate out of. There are also companies that make custom units with wheelchair lifts Etc....let us know how we can help you further.

Thanks for the reply, being on a fixed income (SS) doesn't leave enough to live let alone extras. We did look at a used toy hauler a few years back, very nice one too but the price was out of our range and then we would also have to buy a tow vehicle, another expense. My dream would be a custom Nexus, with a small kennel and plenty of underneath storage (pass thru) with pull out drawers. Would also like to convert the overhead to storage since there is only the two of us and the dogs. Not that we can afford a Nexus but I can dream can't I? I wonder if they ever incorporated a kennel into their customs? I understand they do deliver their units I'll bet they don't do it for free....I believe a small travel scooter that breaks down should fit underneath.

It sounds like on your budget you will need to look at older used motorhomes. The new ones start at $70,000 and go up. Even a van conversion will be in the $50000 plus range.
You can add features to make your motorhome more useable.
Here's a lift that runs about $5000 installed or can be purchased for about $1500 if you have someone that can install it. http://www.burractuators.com/lifts/handy_lift.htm The lift will help you get in and out of the RV.
With the lift you would be able to get a smaller mobility scooter up into the motorhome. Or add a Bruno lift on the rear to carry the scooter. You can find Bruno lifts and others in Craigslist for under $600.
I've seen people take storage compartments with outside doors and build removable runs for their pets. The run is about 6 feet long and attaches to the side of the RV covering the opening for the storage compartment. On the inside of the RV, they install a doggy door that can be locked. So dogs or cats can go outside and use the run and then come back inside the RV.
On your budget it's probably best if you try to modify your current motorhome to fit your needs.

Once again thank you for replying, We currently have an "older" Motor Home 1990 Class C. I had an electric mobility scooter that broke down so you could put it in the back seat of a car but it no longer works and we can't afford another one. What we need to find is a money tree.
I've never seen or heard of the runs you mention. We will probably continue using the x-pen for now. Maybe next year we will purchase a battery run invisible fence to encircle the camper. I don't think installing a doggie door on our rig is feasible. I guess for now we will maybe put on another handle outside the door to help pull us up and maybe a homemade additional step so there isn't as much of a drop. I can get in okay by pulling myself up by the door frame but getting out I'm afraid I might slip and fall as the drop between the step and door opening is a bit much for me.

Go to your doctor and talk to him about accessibility to your home. He can prescribe medicare provided assist devices. YOu never know until you ask.

Only Medical assist devices that Medicare will pay are what is used inside the home they do not pay for anything outside the home.

GllntKnight---Genecop may have the right Idea, have you considered selling your current RV, re-investing that money into a smaller Toy Hauler? Maybe one that could be towed with a 1/2 ton? Take a look at the KZ MXT-20 on the KZ web site. Most things on the inside fold up next to the wall giving room to maneuver (including the bed), a small ramp (at the rear) that drops down to ground level for your walker or scooter access. Maybe something like that could meet your needs. Good Luck.

For what we paid for our current rig and we probably wouldn't even get what we paid it wouldn't be enough for a down payment and then there is the tow vehicle to purchase

Well, ain't it your home? Just because it has wheels, it is still home. Fed gov't acknowledges the mortgage interest on an RV is deductible just like a S&B. Sorry, I fail to see the difference. There is assistance to put lifts in vehicles to lift a scooter, or to put a ramp on the back of a van, so how do they make the break? Same, same.

Medicare does not consider an rv a home. My MIL is wheelchair bound and can have a motorized wheel chair in the house but must use a push wheel chair outside and away from house.

Ask you network. I have tried in devon, they would take one if my wife could load and unload it. I was not allowed to drive it on-board although if I was in my power wheelchair I could. If GK can get on the train himself then I think it would be possible.

The price of a quality A or C seems beyond your budget unfortunately. Would renting an A for periodic trips be a workable alternative? There are also what I call "spotter" companies that place an RV on a site and you use it for a week or so and then you drive home in your car. The Eastern Sierra has a couple of those outfits. Have you considered that option? The dogs could be cared for by a friend for a week.
