Let me start by saying, it is not an easy drive to Boone. There are no interstates to get you there! But it was worth all the curvy mountain roads!
I posted several post all about it here.

It's been many years since we've been to Boone, but you're right, it is worth the drive and the roads.
Beautiful country.

You might want to check out Mountain Stream RV Park just north of Marion, NC on NC Hiway 80 – Buck Creek Road.Any yes, it really is on a beautiful mountain stream.Call ahead to reserve the best “stream spots” although they all are really nice.
You don’t want to come down off the Blue Ridge Parkway in an RV on Hiway 80 to get there – too many turns. You come via their directions – via Marion, NC from the south. (Marion is right off the north side of I-40.)We’ve taken the 39 foot 5’er there often, so don’t worry about coming up from the south via Marion. Not a problem.
You have direct access to the Blue Ridge Parkway going north from the campground on Hiway 80 via a truck or toad, but don’t do it with a big RV.
This is a great place to camp and then run up to Mount Mitchell, Ashville and the other “High Country” areas west of Boone and Blowing Rock as well as accessing the trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway. We recommend this very much and have enjoyed being with the owners, Becky and Ron Johnson many times. Great mountain camping with a full hook-up.
