We have a question about insuring the current car before we purchase the fiver and truck. Plan is to have SD drivers licence and address and still be in NJ after settlement on the house, settlement is in the next few weeks. We will stay with friends until we purchase and register the fiver and truck in SD as well as insure them there in SD. This will occur by the end of July this year. Question is do we change insurance and registration on our current vehicle to SD or keep it in NJ until we trade it for the truck to pull the fiver?

Ask your insurance company and see what they think I would say. Connie and I have already changed our residency and 1 car to SD but are still living at the house in VA (which is on sale as of yesterday). We'll register the 5ver and truck in SD but won't shift our insurance (USAA for the truck/car and Progressive for the trailer) to SD until we close on the house.

Mark and Patty,
I'll agree to check with the insurance company. I don't think there would be a problem with a separate vehicle, but once you get to where you get the truck and RV, it might change. Each insurance company you check will need to be asked at least a couple of extra questions. But even then, those extra questions may only apply to the RV and tow vehicle.
Some insurance companies will NOT cover your RV if you are living in it full time. If you plan on full-timing, always ask that question.
Second, even if you aren't full-timers, ask if the insurance company requires that both the RV and the truck are insured "together" or not. That does not mean that both are looked at as one unit, but that they want both covered under the same policy.
There have been some in the past that mentioned that their insurance companies would not cover the tow vehicle or toad (in the case of motorhomes) if they weren't together.

Howard did a lot of research on insurance once, and as usual, it was exhaustive and well written. do a search and look at the threads generated.

You may want to call an insurance agent who is also an RVer - preferably a full-time RVer. We recently changed agents to such a person .... who we found on a blog written by yet another full-time RVer.
They are licensed in many - but not all states, and can probably give you some quick answers at the least or a complete quote with information you provide. She was able to answer my immediate questions before we purchased our vehicle and then give us a detailed quote via email.
Her name is Chris Yust - and you can reach her at CRYust@gmail.com or 936-425-5041.
