We received the word this week that our 13 year old beloved dog, Berry, is in renal insufficiency. Our long time vet (we're currently at "home base") has prescribed two differenet medications for her as well as a special renal diet. Of course when we leave here in two weeks we will have a supply of everything with us but will need to buy more on the road. Has anyone had to buy pet meds on the road and did you have a problem?
Thanks, Judy

Yep. One of our dogs has low thyroid. We buy her meds wherever we buy ours. Walgreens, Walmart or local pharmacy. No problems at all.

Doris & Dave, how do you do this?

I don't know about Doris & Dave, but our vet writes prescriptions and the pharmacies take them without giving us any grief. Our cat has one prescription that we get in 90 day supplies where ever we are.

What Bill said. The vet even puts refills on the script just like a humans. If no refills then we call the vet and she faxes or calls to the pharmacy.

Just yesterday, I noticed that my local Walmart is now promoting pet meds. They have a large display sign at the pharmacy that talks about filling your script & your pet's script at the same time. Pretty handy.

Thanks everyone! We'll have to get our vet to write us scrips for Berry's medications. There's always a Wal Mart around.

Another option is getting setup with Banfield - the vet office that is in most Petsmarts around the country. This gives you a centralized medical record for your pet, and an easy go-to source for any vet care needed while on the road. They also have a pharmacy in most locations to fill scripts (although, I might suspect filling them at Walmart could be cheaper). There's also online pet medication places you can order from.

For emergencies on the road, the vet can just make a call to our home vet and they will fax records. Hopefully all is going to work out.
