Just curious if anyone knew... We made our first RV trip last weekend to a lake close to our home. We met several really nice people including the RV Host and her husband. They have been living in their RV and have been the host of this particular state park area for 15 years!! I didn't want to ask her because I felt silly asking but what do Host's usually get for that??? Do they get paid or just get their spot free or other benefits... just curious if anyone knew.....

Some get free camping. Some get camping plus some local benefit. Some get camping and a small weekly salary. Some get more. It depends upon how much actual work the campground wants from one or both of the occupants of the RV. There are all sorts of opportunities available all over the US.

Our Park Host positon includes: W/S/E plus Propane, ice, laundry, and a county vehicle to drive to an from the gate when we work. We are asked to work 20 hours each a week. Because all of the park hosts are gone this time of the year except for me I work more hours. I don't have to, but my DW has a fulltime job and can't always fulfill her hours I pick up the slack. Because I'm doing this on my own and I'm usually bored to death I really don't mind the extra work. And I'm not asking for anyhing in return. Another reason why I'll work extra is I really have a hard time when we have people sneaking/driving into the park and not paying. We have one guy who claims that he has never paid and boasts about it And he's been doing this for years so he says. I'd like to nail his butt to the fencepost but the park won't let me do that so maybe I can make him pay once in a ahile. We'll be here another year and a half till DW retires an then it will be to somewhere else for the same thing or maybe a paying position.

The park host official duties include being a professional representative of campgound or park where they are working. They assist nice folks, like yourself, in making the camping experience a pleasant one. Some places that have camp hosts realize the value of their talents and pay them accordingly. Some take advantage of budget restrictions and provide much less than what would be a fair compensation; even at McDonalds.
You do not need to feel "silly" asking questions of the camp host. The good ones will be glad to answer each and every one of them. Perhaps even on their patio over a glass of tea.
