I have been wondering about the availability of fresh fruits & veggies out "on the road", and where (in your opinion) is the best area for those fresh items. Also, how easy is it to find a "natural foods" (read 'organic') market?
Next question: Does anyone here follow an all plant-based diet? If so, how easy/difficult is it to find the proper foods?
Thanks for all of your input!

Can't help you with the diet, but we search out farmers market in every town we go to. We simply search for farmers markets online in the town and invariable there is one, or a number if it's big enough.
Good luck,

Farmer's markets are great, we just went to the Olympia, WA one today with my mother. But they are seasonal and so is the selection. Also look for food co-ops, they are good places for organic foods. We also went to the local food co-op today so my mother could get kasha (roasted buckwheat groats), which she loves. In Florida in winter there was also fresh produce at the flea markets.

Hi Bill,
I love farmer's markets, and since we live in the northeast, we only have them in our local area in the summer and part of the fall. I was hoping that when we get on the road, we can have fresh fruits and veggies year round as we travel - keeping to the southern areas.
I'll check out the food co-ops too. Thanks!

If you are ever in Santa Fe NM (summer-fall) - we have a great Farmers Market - it has been written up as one of the best in the USA. Lots of organic - the food and the people in Santa Fe are VERY ORGANIC!!!!!

There's a great one in Raleigh, NC as well. But I would think any area that has farmland would have a lot of roadside stands where you can buy fresh fruits & veggies. We are vegetarians (although we do eat fish and dairy products so not vegans). We plan to scout out Trader Joe's whenever possible as well.

I agree with Bill, when farmers markets aren't available or the veggies you want are out of season, looking for a local food co-op is a good idea. Also in the south and west you will find a lot of the Whole Foods Market locations. They are a bit pricey but if you are into organics and need your veggies you can find them there. Trader Joe's also carries many organic fruit and veggies etc. As more of us demand organic produce you will find more and more in the regular grocery stores as well, I can even find organic baby spinach and sometimes kale at Walmart. I'd rather get it from the farmer but that's not always a choice.

Love the farmers markets! Picked up some tomatoes, onions, and carrots from some young farmers here in Colorado last week. There is not a store around that has tomatoes like we just had! Kathy, we do not follow a vegan diet but when I get to a park the first thing I do is ask about farmers markets. Also use google for the town we are in. Heading to New Mexico in a couple weeks and hope to find the markets there as well!
