Has anyone tried putting a canoe on top of the toad while driving down the road? DH says no, not a good idea, but (tear drops) we have been together forever!
I know someone will suggest an inflatable, but have you ever paddled over rocks in an inflatable, nasty!
Can not get that thing in the basement
Getting rid of STUFF is okay, having a few problems with a couple "special things" but will work it out.

Putting the canoe on your toad is not an issue (as long as you have racks) we haul our kayaks 16'6 and 14'5 on our jeep wrangler without any issue, I know its tough to get rid of "stuff" we are going to have to deal with soon ourselves , good luck !

Lots of RVers with kayaks on the roof of their toad so you should not have any problems finding a rack that will handle your canoe.

I've seen lots of toads w/kayaks on them. If you love to kayak, it seems like a great activity to take on the road. Load her up!

I've seen canoes mounted vertically on the back of motorhome. The tip of the canoe stuck up above the roof line and I'm sure some sort of custom mount was involved.
I've also seen them on top of the roof, mostly on class C's.
However, I mostly see canoes and kayaks mounted on top of the toads.

We most definitely take our canoe with us! The two main criteria we had when we were looking for a toad were that it could be towed 4 wheels down with no modifications and that it could carry a canoe. We just had to have cross rails installed at the dealer, and we were all set!
(Don't worry - we tie it down front and back as well!)

Thanks everyone for all the info, do not want to leave it behind.
Jim and Linda,
What vehicle did you end up with? Not finding a lot of options for flat towing that DH is comfortable with.

Ended up towing the canoe once after not checking my daughters tie downs. Explain the scratched bottom as from river rocks

Laura,
We chose a 2006 Saturn Vue with AWD. As you probably know, Saturn was dissolved by GM, but we can still get service for it at our local GM dealer. As mentioned in the "Toads" section of this forum, MotorHome Magazine publishes a Dinghy Towing Guide each year. This may help you in your decision. http://www.motorhomemagazine.com/Category/Dinghy-Towing/
By the way, we will have our toad with us at the Rally in a week (Yay! ) and you're welcome to check it out and take it for a spin!

I used to haul my beloved Bell canoe around, but hated having to haul it "everywhere" -- the grocery store, etc. Now I have a wonderful Sea Eagle Fast Track inflatable boat. More stable and comfortable than the canoe, easy to setup/takedown, and fits in the the RV or the trunk of the toad!

Ah, the inevitable inflatable post! That's what the OP was trying to avoid as he really liked the hard bottom on his canoe.

Have you seen the bottom of a higher end Sea Eagle? It's got a heavy-duty layer that handles rocks, tree branches, etc with no problem. Believe me, I used to be a canoe die hard and spent over $2K for my Bell and never thought I'd paddle anything else. All I'm suggesting is the OP consider trying one-- they've got a money-back guarantee if it's not his cup of tea.

Bill, thanks for the defense, and IB311 thanks for the info!
I appreciate all comments!!! Learned something. I have never seen an inflatable with a heavy duty bottom. Although my bottom is heavy duty, I don't like to contend with the rock problem as I said before.
With everyones help, I have convinced my DH (I keep thinking "designated hitter") that my canoe can be carried.
Again, Thank You !!

We just bought a porta-bote. www.porta-bote.com . It's a foldable boat. Haven't tried it in the water yet though. Good luck. Pinon
That canoe and I were a pair before Bunk and I.
