My husband Bob, our dog Guinness, and I hope to transition to the RV lifestyle in 2012, but it could be later. Bob and I are 52 and just recently celebrated 28 years of marriage, Guinness (our Tico dog) is almost 5. We left the rat race in 2006, but my husband eventually returned to full-time employment (although as a telecommuter) since our home in Virginia didn't sell as quickly as we had hoped. We put our home on the market in the summer of 2007 just before the mortgage slump and it sold in 2009. We have been traveling, but not in an RV. We built a home in Costa Rica in 2008, and hope to sell that before beginning full-time RVing. Neither of us has previous RV experience, but traveling the U.S. has been a dream of mine since I was young(er).
I just recently discovered this forum and am so glad I did as it contains a ton of great information. Thanks to all of you who have provided helpful tips and information. Keep up the great work!

Janice and Bob,
Welcome to the RV Dreams forums. This place is the "home" of a lot of knowledge that will be helpful to you. We have folks in RV's ranging from slide-in pickup campers to big rigs (motorhome and fifth wheels.)
Take your time in looking, go to RV shows, dealerships, and if possible, take in an RV rally sometime. If you are looking at something like a travel trailer or fifth wheel, choose your RV first so that you are certain that the truck you get will be heavy enough to handle the size of RV you do buy. A number of times folks have bought their trucks first, only to find out they have to trade because it wasn't big enough. (I almost did that one myself one time when purchasing a 26-foot travel trailer.)
Feel free to ask questions and be open to all kinds of suggestions. Then, once you find a floor plan that you like, start from there. We researched for 2 years before buying our RV, and we were extremely glad we did.

Terry and Jo, NorCal Dan, janni. Thanks for the welcome! Being that we have no previous RV experience, we know we have a lot to learn and we hope to be going to at least one rally next year. I'm now in the process of trying to narrow down the best state for domicile, although I think I'm pretty close on settling that one. Trying to narrow down the list of RVs is tough, but I think we're honing in on some particular brands that we want to look at first. Needless to say, we have more research to do, and I'm sure I'll be back with more questions as we make progress toward our next adventure. Thanks again.

Ckerr, bonnie and clyde. Thanks for the welcome! I agree this forum looks like it has a great bunch of folks. We're looking forward to a new and exciting chapter in our lives and I'm really hoping we can begin that chapter in 2012. But, if it can't be 2012, we'll take it when it happens. For now, I'll continue to gather information so that we'll be ready to go when the time is right. Thanks again.
