We are on our way back on long trip from Las Vegas,to Wash,DC,to Tampa Fla, & return. Currently in Texas hill country, west of San Antonio. Next on I-10 to Ft. Stockton, then on to Las Cruces. We had planned to take I-10 all the way to Phoenix, then connect via 60/93 to the 40,then back home. I see I could go from Las Cruces back up to Albq.to the 40, or take the 17 up to Flagstaff,to the 40 and home.Since it seems to be hotter in Phx.than just about anywhere,I thought about alternates. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Your idea seems good although I've never gone that way. To get around Phoenix on I-10, we take I 8 at Casa Grande to Gila Bend then north on 85 (not sure but I think its 85) meeting I 10 just west of Buckeye.

You already know the most direct route and that would total 1253 miles from Kerrville, TX. The next option is to go into Phoenix, up I-17 and then 40W which adds about 100 miles (1354) and a big climb up to Flagstaff. The final option is to go I-25N to Albuquerque which adds only a few additional miles (1381). There are several smaller climbs from Las Cruces to Albuq and then Albuq to Flagstaff. If you are planning nothing more than overnight stops I doubt the temps will be of any concern and I would take the shortest route. If you are planning to stop and visit some of the areas you plan to pass through I would take the Las Cruces, Albuq, Flagstaff route. There are some really neat areas to visit including the VRA radio telescope site West of Socorro, NM.
