We use a spray bottle of generic Listerine. Believe it or not, they hate the stuff! When we're sitting outside, we spray a circle around the chairs/table/whatever. Never a bite!

You can even dilute the Listerine with a little water and it will still work.

The first part of this is somewhat tongue in cheek and of no help whatsoever. Chemotherapy drugs work wonders. When I was being treated for lymphoma in 1999 I had no problem with mosquitoes. I was toxic to them. In fact, one evening after dark when I had fed some feral cats in a park nearby, I sat down on a stone curb to watch them eat, not noticing that I was sitting in a trail of ants. It was very hot, and I was drenched with sweat. When I got home into the light I found that my shirt was covered with dead ants.
On a more serious note I have found that products containing Deet, like Deep Woods Off work very well. THe problem with that is that in the case of Deep Woods Off it's kind of oily, so you have to take another bath in the evening after returning to your base to get it off you before going to bed.
Deet is also effective at repelling ticks. Both ticks and mosquitoes can spread diseases, some very serious and potentially fatal. So I'm kind of dubious about home remedies.

Off Powerpads work great to clear an area of skeeters. The one I use looks like a small lantern. There's a candle at the bottom that heats the powerpad. One whiff of that and the skeeters drop out of the air. Works really great when they get inside your RV and you get tired of having them buzz around your ears. Light the candle and let the powerpad do it's thing for a few minutes inside the RV and no more live skeeters. (note, this is not recommended on the label, but ...... better living through chemistry. Just to be clear, only do this for a few minutes, don't leave it burning inside the RV all night).

Brewers yeast.... if you ingest brewers yeast your sweat will repel the critters. Of course the best way to ingest brewers yeast is to drink a lot of beer. That actually works two ways. You'll be so mello that the bugs even if they are biting won't bother you.
We don't often get into Mosquito country but I did try using brewers yeast and it seemed to work. Now I just use OFF and live with the smell.

Any spray you can find with DEET. Other things might work but DEET is proven to be effective and recommended by all the "professionals".

I've never heard of using listerine, doesn't it make you sticky?
Like Bill, I use DEET sprays, Deep Woods Off for super buggy places and Off Smooth and Dry the rest of the time.

This just happened to pop up on my AT&T/Yahoo home page:
For a change this summer I haven't seen a single mosquito so far - probably because of drought conditions that have been prevailing here this year.

Queen,
Don't spray the Listerine on yourself. We use it when we're sitting outside, We just spray on the ground around us. It wouldn't work if you were walking on a trail or something.
I think it would be quite sticky.

If you don't like the Deet products you can get "Cutter Advanced" which uses Picaridin. The packaging is blue with an orange top. It works fine but you have to apply it more often than strong Deet products. Also they make clothes that repel mosquitoes and such, but the shirts run $70 or so. I got one at REI when we went to Alaska. The shirts can be washed and still be effective, but don't wash them too often.
