I'm looking for our FT 5th wheel, & I've found a used 5er that has an Advantium convection/microwave, no propane oven. I know virtually nothing about convection ovens. From what I've read so far, it sounds like you can't use a convection oven for toasting. In our house, I have a toaster oven that I use daily to make toast. So I'm thinking that I'll need to take along the toaster oven when we go FT. Am I correct in thinking that a convection/microwave won't make toast?
Thanks!!

No, a convection oven won't make toast. Buy a $10 toaster for toast and use your convection oven for everything else. We made the mistake of replacing our Sharp convection oven with the Advantium and while the Advantium is OK, it's not anywhere near as good as the Sharp. We do not have an oven but we cook all sorts of things (including Janet's famous cinnamon rolls) in our convection oven. Take a look at the owners manual. There is an amazing amount of stuff that you can do with this terrific tool but if your big concern is toast the Advantium will fall short.

Sorry to be a bit off topic here, but just the mention of Janet's cinnamon rolls, which she made at the RV Dreams rally in April, made my mouth water!!! Penny

We love the Convection oven, it did take Delaine a short time to learn the Convection oven.... However this is our 3rd 5th wheel with the Convection oven, we deleted the Propane Oven when we ordered out last Mobile Suites. Delaine doesn't miss the Propane oven at all... Read the book with your Convection Oven....

We have both a gas oven and a Sharp convection microwave and don't use the gas once a year. The convection microwave does everything. Except toast.:)

Since I had always considered the toaster oven to be a relic of a time gone by, can you tell me what kind of things you use a toaster oven for? Space is a consideration in all RV's and it seems that this will also take up a lot of valuable counter space.

I always thought that I'd want a propane oven AND a convection oven.....but the propane oven in our 5er doesn't cook the tops of anyting! So, if we ever get another one....I will not be particular about having two ovens....the convection does most things....I also carry with me a "Nesco Roaster" since I love t bake certain beef roast in the oven....and the Nesco does it better....so much so that I use my bigger one all the time in my S&B. Also....have a little toaster for my 5er for toast...since we like toast. In a pinch, for toast, you can put in a skillet with butter and "fry"....ohhhhh so good!

Bill,
I use the toaster oven to toast all forms of bread, english muffins, bagels, etc. I use it to bake small items in small quantities, like something that is a single serve frozen item, and to melt/broil cheese especially on french onion soup. In my toaster roven, I can just fit in a small ceramic soup bowl, which is great for the onion soup. I use the toaster oven quite a bit!

I think that you will find that a small toaster will handle all of your bread toasting needs and your convection oven will handle the rest. Janet makes an excellent FO soup and the cheese melts very nicely in the oven. I would never tell you not to use whatever you like, but keep an open mind to the fact that you may be able to do what you need without adding more "stuff" to the coach.

Bill,
Yes, I'm really having to adjust my normal expectations of what I "need" on a daily basis. It's a real learning process! I have a hugh kitchen in the S/B so paring down the utensils/gadgets/appliances is proving to be a challenge. But I am looking forward to learning about cooking with a convection oven. From what I've read so far, people generally seem to be pleased with them.
Thanks for your help!

We originally got by with the con/micro and a toaster and then Howard and Linda wrote about a small toaster oven they bought and liked, so we bought one and have found it very handy for toasting and small baking / broiling jobs. It has a very small footprint. It's a Hamilton Beach. I'm sure if you look in the files you'll find the thread.

Thanks for that tip, Fred! My current toaster oven is pretty ancient & I think it is just too big to go in the RV, so I intended to look for something smaller. I'll check out Hamilton Beach.
