Just did my walk thru on the 5th wheel on Friday and tech mentioned that I needed to use rv/marine tp - but staff at campingworld say I dont need to... what advice should I follow???

You don't need special toilet paper, but you do need paper that dissolves easliy and completely, to prevent possible blockage when you dump your black tank
A good way to determine suitability is to put a piece in a glass of water and see what happens after a few minutes. Swirl it around and see if it dissolves.
We have been using Angel Soft from the super market for 5 years now without any problems. I'm sure there are other brands that will work as well also.

We've used regular Scott's tp for over 12 years..always on sale somewhere...never had a problem...use the extra rolls to take up space in the medicine cabinet when we're on the road so stuff doesn't roll around. Mary

Fill an empty jar (a quart mayo jar works great) half full or so with water. Put in a sheet or two of your toilet paper. Shake the jar rapidly for a few seconds. If the toilet paper falls apart it's RV holding tank friendly. Shouldn't take more than 2 or 3 minutes to dissolve.

We have been in one type of RV or another off and on for 40 years. We have never used special RV/Marine TP and have never had an issue.

OK. I'll be the "turkey" that brings up the "legal" issue.
Go ahead and do the test of TP in water. I would have to agree that the Angel Soft would be good.
Now, when we picked up our Mobile Suites, there was one piece of paper from the manufacturer of the toilet that said, "Do not use Charmin Ultra." So, I'd say to look carefully at ALL the literature that came with your RV and see if you have a similar cautionary document.
Now, they didn't specify "Ultra Soft" or "Ultra Strong". So, I need to do the TP in water test myself because I have the dreaded "H" problem (yeah, hemorrhoids) and I REALLY like softer TP.
OK, Guys. Now we can have the "H" jokes.

I, too, did the jar-shake test and was pleased to see that my usual Angel Soft passed the test! That's what we have been using the past year and so far no problems. We do, however, flush the black tank frequently.

The extent to which one would completely rely on the advise of the walk thru tech would be judged on whether or not he/she has ever owned an RV. A question, perhaps to be asked when doing the walk thru. I was kinda having a funky day until I read this post, I don’t mean to make light of the helpful and accurate comments about it, but when I got the image of my fellow RVers doing a TP test with a mason jar, I wondered if that might be one of those moments that make a reality TV program.Terry I suspect in today’s society that there probably is a legal issue to TP. If the TP package says septic safe, regardless of brand, then it also will work well in an RV.
Ahoweth I agree with you. But then my opinion is just a wipe away from reality.

When we moved into the S/b we had a lot of trouble with double flushing. Once in a while everything was fine. We thought it was the fact it was the first low flush toilets we ever had. Then one day we switched to Angle soft. Never a problem since. When they came to clean the septic tank they said Angel soft is the best you can use with a septic. We plan on sticking with it when we full time.

Keep in mind that holding tanks are not septic systems. If the tp does not dissolve in the tank chances are it will clog your discharge valve.

Ok, I have a question. I have Chrones, which means I have the bid "d" alot. I have to have soft tissue, and now will switch to Angel Soft (was using Charmin), nothing in my lit on the Allergo except to use RV TP which has always been out of the question cuz of my needing soft tissue.
Now the question - Can I use the flushable wipes in the black tanks?

We have used the 2 ply Kirkland from Costco and it easily passes the shake test. I don't know why anyone would use the expensive RV stuff...Angel Soft is great too.

Scotts. States on the package "Safe for septic and RV". I also use Dometic tank treatment for fulltime rv'ers in the black tank that breaks down waste and tissue. Right now I use twice the amount then normal because we are not able to flush the black tank when we dump. Water spigot winterized.

I'm not full timing yet. But have been camping for years. I have been buying and using normal paper for years and never had any problems. The chemicals you put in the tank seems to turn everything to water in a few days.

Here is some info on dissolving times of some brands. Unless you dump very soon after using the toilet it looks like any brand will be okay since the worst ones dissolve in less than a couple of minutes. We full timed for 11 years and used whatever my wife liked with no problems.

Scott is septic safe (dissolves quickly) and it's the cheapest (most sheets/dollar), plus I my fingers don't easily poke through like they do with some of the softer brands. That's why I use the 1000 ct. single ply Scott. I've used it since my out-house/septic tank days. No reason to switch. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

We use Costco toilet paper and have not had a problem. It comes in big packages that last us 6 months, so we need lots of storage space for it. We have had problems using "any old brand", clogging up the tank rinse and more.

We switched from the Angel Soft to Scott's. I found that when dumping the black tank, I don't see bits of toilet paper going through the six to eight inch clear plastic sewer adapter. With the Angel Soft, I used to see it all the time, but with the Scott's, I see very little if any paper bits. In fact, the time I take for flushing the black tank has been cut at least in half from what I used to do with Angel Soft.
As for the "disintegration" factors in that 2000 Consumer's Report, that information is at least 15 years old. Perhaps longer. When I was a retail manager (major electronics company), we found that Consumer's Report posted out of date information themselves. We had customers coming in to buy a particular electronic product that was highly rated on Consumer's Report, only to find that the product had been discontinued as much as two years before. They were pretty atrocious about date of testing and date of publishing results being way out of sync.
Also, the manufacturer of our toilet specifically recommended NOT using Charmin's products.

All you have to do is use plenty of water. There is no need for adding any chemicals. Just water - which is the universal solvent and does a terrific job liquifying everything. The one mistake new RVers have is not using ENOUGH water.

Agree Barb. We've been using regular Angel Soft for some time now and it's been fine...BUT Lee fills the black tank several times until the water runs clear ever ytime we are at full hookups for an extended period. And we never use chemicals ...the regular flushing keeps the smells down almost completely.

We have been full time for 8 yrs and have never used rv toilet paper or tank chemicals just plenty of water like Barb indicated. Newbees often have odor problems because they don't know how to use the exhaust fans effectively. If a living area fan is on and the bathroom fan is not on and closed, odors from the bathroom when in use can be brought into the living area. Turning on the bathroom fan when in use will solve this problem. If the bathroom vent fan is open but off and the living area fan is on , odors from the vent pipe on top of the rv can be brought inside the rv. We keep the bathroom vent fan closed or open and turned on when living area fan is on and never have a problem. No need for odor chemicals. We also keep a small waste can in the bathroom for any paper that is not absolutely necessary to be flushed down the toilet. Be careful with the chemicals you use to clean the toilet also because they can affect the natural breakdown that occurs in the tank.

You may want to recheck the Costco Kirkland TP. That's what we use at home and love it so I did a test along with Angel Soft that we used to buy. I had 2 "canning" jars, put 1 piece in each jar with it half filled with water. One really good shake and let it sit. Even over night, the Kirkland was still in one piece that I just about was able to take out without tearing it. The Angel Soft was falling apart within minutes. So now we still use Kirkland at home but Angel Soft in the camper.

Interesting, since we did the dissolve test with Costco toilet paper a month ago and it dissolved OK. Running the tank sprayer, we have not seen a problem.
