Is is necessary to get a 5th wheel hitch that can handle more lbs. than the gross weight of the trailer?  i.e., our 5er could weight 14,000 lbs. loaded.  What size 5th wheel hitch is necessary and/or recommended?

I would suggest a hitch rated higher just for the fact IF you ever get a larger unit then you are covered.Our Cedar Creek is right at 14,000 lbs and our hitch is rated at 16,000 lbs.Of course the higher rated you go the higher the cost unless you do like we did and buy used.There are usually good deals out there on 5th wheel hitches.Make sure you get a double pivot hitch and one that has had proper maintenence performed.
