We need to get from Astoria, OR area to Rapid City, SD. I 90 is looking like it is the way to go since we don't have lots of extra time, I would love a first time peek at Yellowstone. Has anyone done this route, any down sides we should know about? We are running pretty maxed out and have some concern about the grades. Any advise on the best route to get to I 90 would be appreciated greatly. Thank you, bunches.

US30 to the bridge into Longview, WA and then over to I-5 north to WA-18 east to I-90 will get you there the fastest and the only city traffic is around Tacoma, WA. There are grades on I-90 (and some little ones on US30 and WA-18), but there is lots of signage and you will have lots of company going slow. No way to avoid the grades since you have multiple mountain ranges to get to Rapid City, including the Continental Divide (just east of Butte, MT on I-90) no matter what route you take.

Everytime I have driven in and out of Astoria in the last 18 months, I have also found leaving through Lomgview to be much smoother, generally better traffic, less grades and it seems every time I take the direct route via or towards Portland, there ends up being sudden sleet & hail going over that part of the coast range. Maybe it's just me though, lol.
