Short version-----Live on Long Island NY---Rig in Rhinebeck NY, hopefully Rig will never see Long island. Called a RV place in Rhinebeck, asked them about Inspection, they said, "if you live on Long Island, your Rig must be inspected there" I always thought a NY State inspection, covered the State. According to this guy even if my plans are to keep the Rig in Rhinebeck, and other states, then eventually full time all over the country, i must purposely drive back to Long Island every year to get it inspected at a place the Rig will never be, Am i missing something here? genecop, it may be like in TX, you must inspect in your county of residence. Something to do with vehicle emissions. Some of the counties in TX are under the EPA mandated low VOC emissions/particulate emissions. Since yours is a motorhome/truck conversion, they may want to test the emissions. That is my only guess.
But, I betcha when you full time, you will change your residence to somewhere there is no personal income tax. Then, you will inspect according to your new residence.
Another note, all RVs are required to be inspected for vehicle safety equipment in TX. However, I do not know of many trailers that maintain that inspection. wink wink Something to do with most state certified inspection stations are not equipped or have the knowledge to check a trailer or 5er. For one thing, they are required to drive at a certain speed and stop within certain lengths. I ain't about to let some greasy footed kid take my 5th wheel and truck and do a panic stop, especially when they have no idea how to handle a trailer. All trailers will leave a dealership with a sticker on it. But there is no way they hooked it up to a truck and did the required stop. Most dealerships move trailers with a fork lift around the yard.

I know a few full-timers that have their vehicles registered in TX. But they spend little if any time actually in the state. Most likely related to the fact that many are SKP's and use the mail service for their permanent address. Many of these displaced Texans have never had their vehicles inspected. Not saying this is true, but they claim that state vehicle inspections are only enforced by the registration state. In other words, other states are not charged with enforcing Texas vehicle requirements and will not ticket you as long as the registration and insurance are current.
The rub is when you find yourself actually in Tx. I believe you have 3 days to get the inspection done once you enter the state. That's what we did on our way to Missouri. Since we were passing through Tx we stopped and had the inspection done. I did not have it done in the county where we are registered, and nothing was asked by the inspection station about what county I registered the RV.

Not to hijack the thread but in Texas you can get your inspection any place in the state regardless of the county you are registered in but if you have it inspected in a location that requires emissions testing than you are required to have the emissions test and pass it even though Polk county doesn't require it.

And that is only one of the reasons we domicled in South Dakota. No vehicle inspections. Do not have to worry about returning every year.

Not correct. If you live in a county requiring emissions, like Harris and the surrounding 7 counties, you cannot be inspected anywhere else, just in your home county.

Actually ,as long as you get it inspected in a emissions county your fine.(been doing it for years) in Texas
Now on the other hand , you have to re-new your registration in only your county, but that can be done by mail.

Genecop; Search The DMV website. I used to understand that in NYS/City as long as the emissions test was the same as the county you reside in you could have it done as long as you are not doing a first-time titling and registering of the vehicle. That is what I assume from 2007 when I was there. Best of Luck! Pieere

If your truck or MH is diesel you don't have to be concerned about where in the state of Texas you get an inspection. They don't do emissions testing on diesels.
I suspect that it's true about going without an inspection sticker when you are outside of a particular state. I was out of Texas for 4 months last summer without a current inspection. I did get one at the first stop when returning tho. Looking for expired stickers is at the top of the highway patrol's list of things to do.

Seriously though I'd call the state agency in Albany that oversees vehicle inspections and see what they say.
