Verizon is selling the Motorola Droid for $199.99 with 2 yr contract or contract extension. Granted I think they are offering a Buy One, Get One Free deal. But I just saw that phone at Walmart for Verizon service selling for $98.88.
If I only want one phone, is there any reason not to buy it at Walmart?

How do you know the new one from the old one?

two travelers is talking about the HTC Droid Incredible, not the Motorola Droid. The Incredible just came out, is a little faster than the Motorola, has a better camera but does not have a physical keyboard. Verizon sells three "Droid" phones, the HTC Droid Eris (low end but quite usable), the Motorola Droid and the HTC Droid Incredible. All now run Android 2.1, though they might come with a lower version number but will automatically update.
Wal-Mart should work fine. I have also seen the Motorola Droid at Costco for about the same price.

Oh. That's funny though since after I saw Two Travelers post I looked at some of the chatter on the Droid forum and some other Droid blogs and there is rumor of a new Motorola Droid. Some are calling it Droid 2, others are calling it Shadow or Extreme.
Probably some mix of rumor and fact. But supposedly it will have an 8 mp camera and a better qwerty keyboard. The speculation is it will come out later in June or maybe July. Some of the chatter says it will be metal vs. plastic.
Meantime, I also found Amazon.com listing the Motorola Droid for $19.99! What in the heck can that be all about? It sounds scary to me.

That $19.99 is for new service and is probably not available for a two year extension. Why is $19.99 from Amazon scary? I suspect they get a lot of accessory sales along with the phone order so that is why they have such a low price. The reviews on Amazon listing are quite useful, the first one listed compares the Motorola and the Incredible.
You can often get the HTC Droid Eris for $0.

My "scary" comment was along the lines of "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." I assumed there was some catch. Or maybe the phones are not new but refurbished or returns. I couldn't imagine that Amazon could sell a brand new Droid for $19.99 if the lowest bricks & mortar price is $98 or $99, and of course Verizon's price of $199.

$129.99 for an extension upgrade. Wal Mart sounds better (although...OK we won't go there)
