I am looking at purchasing my first GPS and like everything that I do, I research the topic till I am thoroughly confused.
The GPS will be used for vacations within North America (not necessarily via RV) but the first big test coming up will be in Alaska in an RV.
In reading some of the reviews of GPS models, picking up a satellite(s) signal seems to be an issue.
My question is, for those that have been to Alaska, what model did you use and did you have a problem with that?
I am looking for a GPS that has good navigational capability, easy user interface, and a nice BIG readable screen.
I am interested in the Garmin 1490T with the 5" display but some of the reviews I read claimed that the unit was constantly restarting, etc. Was this a bug in the earlier models and no longer one now. I particularly like the feature of letting you know the  most desired lane to be in prior to making your next turn or exit off a highway.

Why are you concerned about Alaska? A GPS will pick up a signal anywhere in the world. The question is does it have the map installed for where you are in the world. I believe all of the Garmin models come with all of North America preinstalled. They all pretty much do the same things nowadays and most models will tell you what you have to do on your next move, ie. make a left in 2 tenths of a mile, or take the exit to the right. I believe the problems with restarting are in the past. We have many friends with different brands and models and no one complains of this issue. Enjoy Alaska.

If you will be using the Church's book (and you should), then a GPS that will find lat/long locations will be invaluable. Many campgrounds in Alaska do not have "regular" addresses and the lat/long points noted in the Church's book are wonderful!
