OK - We've had our fifth wheel for about 3 weeks, spent 2 weeks getting things packed aboard and are headed for Orlando - carefully and in 250 to 300 mile segments. We're near Austin now and will be passing through or around Houston tomorrow to stay in Beaumont. We're Texas residents and have been to Houston many times - but only in a passenger vehicle - never towing anything! Any recommendations? Any experience skirting to the north through Conroe? Thanks in advance for any tips for a couple of newbies!

Last winter we stayed at an RV park/swap meet north on Eldrige. I think it was called Traders but I'm not sure. They told us when heading to Beaumont to take the north toll road as opposed to I-10 which we did. (highway 8??) It was fine...can't comment on I-10. Your Conroe idea is more out of the way but really I-10 should be Ok too. Take it slow...don't let anyone hurry you and you should be fine whichever way you go.

Craig,
I would go straight through on I-10. The only problem area is construction at the San Jacinto river which is between the Beltway and Baytown on the east side of Houston. An alternate route would be take the beltway north and then on the east side take Hwy 90 east which will put you drop you in the middle of Beaumont. Not sure where your going in Beaumont but as for as Houston goes I would go straight through between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. the closer to 9 a.m. the better traffic will be.

Thanks for the encouragement! We made it safely to Beaumont and travelled through Houston between 11:00 and 11:30. Thanks again for the quick replies!
