I wonder if anyone could provide some travel insights, experience, tips, where you camped, route followed, etc. We are looking to travel north this summer from Charleston, SC through North Carolina into Virginia. I have always been wanted to see Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. We have a 40ft. motorhome and tow a Jeep. We would love to hear from anyone who has explored this area and would be willing to share your experiences. Thank you very much.

FreeToRoam,
We have been up through that area a few times. The last time was 3 or 4 years ago, but we are planning on heading up through there again in April of this year.
The light houses in the Outer Banks area, (there's more than 1), are very interesting. We enjoyed Kitty Hawk and the Wright Bros. memorial, the Fort Raleigh Historic Site in Manteo, and of course, the beaches.
In the past, we have stayed at commercial campgrounds, (very expensive), but this time, I think we'll try out the National Parks. I have done some research on the ferry system, and come to the conclusion that you can take the ferry for less cost that it would take to buy the fuel to drive around Pamlico Sound to get to the Outer Banks from the Morehead City area. http://www.ncdot.org/transit/ferry/routes/schedule/route005.html will give you info on the ferry system.
We really enjoy the whole SC. NC, VA area, and there's lots to see and do all along the way.
