Does anyone have any recommendations on shops that can convert (correctly) HDT's to single rear axle for 5th hauling use? I'm sure any well equipped truck shop could do the job but I wanted to get feedback from anyone who's had it done. I've read about Larry Z from Texas, but I want to find out about true truck shops that can do it safely and correctly.
Also, from reading other sites I don't see what the "problem" is in finding a used rig to convert (most look for automatics or autosticks). I have found them with no problem at truck dealers across the country just from searching the web. For $25-$50k you can get a very nice rig that can tow anything as Jack has mentioned and be used for weekend getways if the sleeper is configured correctly. Thanks for any info.

Any truck frame shop can single a tractor. It is done all the time.
YOU should be educated about what the correct way to do it is, and make sure it is done that way. DO NOT assume that they will do things the way they should be. For example, the intricacies of restoring the ABS on the single axle needs careful research and attention. You need to know what ABS you have going into the project, and what can be done to get that ABS correct on the singled tractor.
My website details the things to watch out for.
Done properly, it is no big deal. Done incorrectly, it is a disaster and very expensive to correct.
The HDT forum on the SKP website has a "Resource Guide" section in it on singling. Look for reliable places there, first.
