I just ran across this article on a new electrical connector to couple the tow vehicle to your trailer or fifth wheel. This could be a major improvement to the existing technology. 

In less than 3 years of fulltiming, we have had a number of instances where we have lost electical connection with the trailer and have had to visit dealers for repair. Check this out.
