Still on the campground/boondocking topic.....but in conjunction with the "personal security" (weapons for defense) topic (on another posting).
I carry "protection" with us when we go tent camping. Mostly for "critters", however, also for "de'tente" for the stupider things in life (It's a Marine thing.....And Yes before any of your other Services say it.....there are more stupider things than being a Marine!).
Lately, some of the Corps of Engeneers and even State Park sites are getting "stupider and stupider", we've pretty much limited ourselves to known SRAs and NF sites.
Have any of you, that get off the beaten path from time-to-time, ever felt threatened while boondocking or "dry camping"? Especially around the border states in the SW...and I don't mean this in being prejudice. I am asking with the fact that we all know what is going on in the world, and it's just not "workers" crossing borders.
Do you have limitations as to areas you avoid while crossing this great country?

Never - certainly not any more so than when a random unknown group of people/kids walks down the street in front of my stix/brix.
The standard rules apply and each person's tolerance is different.
Don't flaunt what you got, don't talk up what you do, don't leave things open or unlocked, basically, don't be dumb... We all know the drill...
I have boondocked along our northern border and countless WalMarts (oh my!). I do avoid big city areas - mostly because boondock locations typically can not accommodate my fat rig. And I do spend a lot of time in a tent many dozens of miles up a trail as well.
In any case, If I had to pick, I will admit that I would be more concerned about the 2-legged animals than the 4-legged ones in any of stix, RV, or tent.

The DUDE is right on. I would be more concerned with no cell service and internet...Having lived in N.M. for the past 12 yrs and camping close to the borders I can honestly say there isnt a place where I did not feel at ease. Now if your talking about a big city Walmart boondocking I would think twice. southwestjudy

RV'ing in general seems to be a very safe pastime, the people you meet are mostly very friendly, or they keep to themselves. We've never felt in any danger, no matter where we've been, including down in Mexico.
A lot of "safety" has to do with your own personal feelings. Do you feel safe where you live and move about now? If you do, then you'll feel safe wherever you travel. Of course, as others have said, you have to use common sense. Occasionally you might come across a campground in a "bad" neighborhood. If it doesn't feel right, move on to another one. That's one of the benefits of the lifestyle, Any time your not happy where you are, pull the cords and be gone in minutes.
