I was just checking on medical insurance coverage.  WOW!!! Scary.
We are 61 and 56 with no medical conditions.  The quotes so far are over $2000.00.  Can anyone tell me where to go to get a reasonable rate or is this the price for coverage where ever you go? Thanks for the information. 

We use PC insurance (superstore) $832 for both of us for 6 months. We are both late fifties. Got quotes from lots of places (Manulife, Medipac etc) and none were anywhere near $2000

If you go with PC we have some experience with them. Last year we had a claim (approx $23000). The first problem was finding a DR who would accept Cdn insurance. Once we did the medical service was great. PC is underwritten by AIG and they through all kinds of roadblocks in our way before they would pay. We got calls from hositals and doctors that AIG would not pay. It took us lots of calls, providing useless paperwork and certifications etc. They finally paid everything (about 9-10 months late) but it was a hassle. This years premium does not take into account last years claim. They say they don't care about previous claims as long as the condition is not ongoing. Seems strange to me but OK.

You MUST buy out of country insurance when leaving Canada. OHIP will only cover a minscule amount of medical. You would be forced to pay yourself and collect what little they would reimburse you for. ( if any) OHIP is not recogonized in the US. I know someone who was financially ruined when they had a major car accident and was hospitalized with no out of province Ins. A friend broke his angle in Ohio while visiting... no ins..... they drove straight away to Windsor Ont. and got fixed up !

denwood...Kelly is correct. Ohip is Ontario..we are from Alberta but the same is true. Our 23,000 was only for medical service on an outpatient basis (no hospital stay). If you were hositalized it wouldn't take long for costs to skyrocket. The Canadian "medicare" works well while in your home province but not necessarily elsewhere.

Thanks for the reply.  Where did you get your insurance from?  So far I've checked and gotten quotes that are ranging from $1200.00 to over $2000.00-no medical conditions either.  Thanks for your help.

I'm interested in this as well. We have used CARP (the first year) and Brian Sanderson Insurance since then. He's affiliated with the RV Explorer Club and his office is in Lindsay so it's usually convenient for us. We usually pay between $1000 and $1100 for the two of us for 6 months. We've had 2 claims in 4 years. They seem to take about 6 months to pay. Gordon's claim for his Valley Fever in Arizona last year is yet to be paid. His insurance was thru Manu Life but we haven't gotten any calls from the doctors or hospitals yet the way we did when I was in the hospital in Cincinatti in 2006. Not sure who we'll go with this year as we won't know if we're even able to travel until Gordon's appointment with the Infectious Disease Specialist on Oct1. If we're ok to go then I'll have to do some serious shopping around. Hopefully they'll be able to get the cards to us before we leave. Will probably go with Sanderson again just because it's easy and the companies do pay....eventually. I've heard CAA has good insurance but they're pricier. I heard this morning that if you have Good Sams you can get a site for $99.00 per month.  Don't know where?  ARe any of these cards good for people who are looking for a month stay somewhere?  I was under the impression that you could possibly get a 10% discount, but not much more.

A question about a telephone.  In Canada I'm with Telus.  They said to me that it would be cheaper to get a phone in the US and buy  a prepaid card.    What does everyone else do from Canada?  We will be using our computer for communications with our kids, but in case of emergencies on the road or whatever we need a cell.  Thanks for the information.

Our second year out we got Verizon cell phones. We're on the North American plan and pay about $90/month for 2 phones with our own phone numbers. Works in both US and Canada with no roaming. We just don't have Verizon services in Canada but that hasn't bothered us much.

Yes, we can use the cell phones in Canada, we just don't have access to in calling (calling other Verizon cell phones), we have to phone our own phone number to get voice mail instead of dialing *86, we can't update our roaming and thinks like that. They've been great but fairly expensive!

WE also have a Telus phone in Canada. The roaming charges are high so what we have done is picked up a Trac Phone at Walmart in the states and bought the double minutes for life card. That effectively halfs the cost of any minutes you buy. I think what we are paying now is 0.09/minute. There is an access number to dial for Canada and Mexico and they allow you to set up a Canadian number as well, so if family and friends back home want to call they can either reduce or eliminate their long distance cost.
