Do any of you use diesel fuel additives? If so, do you see any benefits, such as increased mileage or reduction in the engine noise? What additives do you find are the best?

I'm sure your going to get other opinions on this, I own some big trucks, yes 18 wheelers, Cummins, Cat and Detriots motors, the manufacturers tell me that additives are not needed and that the additive people are selling their product. With that being said I do use them in the colder months just for anti-gelling problems. I have some friends that swear by them, and say they get better fuel mileage and less wear on the fuel pump, how they know this without tearing the pump apart is beyond me. So with all of that here's what I can tell you for sure, it's not that costly to add and if it makes you feel better do it.

The only additive that may required are to motor oils. The ULSD fuels have some what less lubriosity than LSD fuels. The same problem arises if you are dealing with an older car (like a '59 Studebaker) or an older coach ( 98 Beaver ).
The car solution is high quality oils such as Delo or Rotella. The solution for diesels may be an oil additive.
Cat says it is not required and I believe that is also Cumming's story for fuel. As said by Niles and Deb perhaps only for anti gelling in cold weather. However in our quest for the eternal 70 degrees even that is not a problem.
I am ABSOLUTELY SURE that there will be other opinions. I just remember the mess I cleaned out of an engine to which STP had been regularly added.

I use Motorcraft deisel additive in my Ford deisel. I use it to keep the injectors clean and for antigel in the winter. I seem to notice better mileage and it idles smoother. I bought the truck used and at times it idled rough, now it does not. It also starts better. At about $7 a bottle that lasts 3 tanks full it does not cost much.
