Heading to California in about a week or so. We're driving a 36' gas MH towing a Saturn sedan. Proposed route is I-10 west to the Pamona/Covina area, then 210 to San Bernadino where we'll pick up the 5 North to 46, then west to Paso Robles. We've been through the mess of the metro area as far as the 210, but what is the road like on 5 North, then 46 west? Are there lots of twisty-turns and hills? Is that a better route than going out to 101?
We'd appreciate any information you can share about that stretch of California. Thanks!
Happy Travels, Ellie

We traveled 46 just a couple of weeks ago, and it was no problem at all. Lots of farm country, level land and not too much traffic.

I agree - 46 is a pretty mellow drive. If you take 46, please let me know your thoughts on the mass of oil rigs close to I-5. It is a section of land that is just covered with those oil-well-grasshopper-looking pumps. It is very odd how they are in such a small area. It is always amusing driving by them :)
If you have a little time, I suggest foregoing I-5 altogether and take 101 north up to Paso Robles. The drive is more scenic, and not as race-trackish as I-5. Maybe I have driven I-5 too many times or something, as I avoid it as much as possible now. Much of I-5 is rough, and the truck traffic is pretty competitive. 101 will take longer, but if you have the time, it is worth driving through Santa Barbara, a quick stop in Solvang for Ebelskivers, Pismo Beach, and SLO.
Don't forget to stop at Tobin James Winery when in Paso (if you are wine drinkers). It is one of my favorite wineries - fun atmosphere and great wine.
Enjoy!

You might want to consider I-10, I-215 N, I-15 N, CA-138 W, CA-14 N, CA-58 W, CA-99 N, CA-46 W. You would avoid the entire LA Metro area and the route is only about 20 miles further than going the route you are considering. You will easily make up the difference by the reduction in traffic. I pulled my 5th wheel over this route as a complete newbie earlier this year with no problems. If you are looking for a place to stop along the way we overnighted at the Orange Grove RV Park in Bakersfield. It is convenient to highway 58. The RV Park is surrounded and the sites are separated by Orange trees.

Grant - Thank you for the suggested alternate route!! That's perfect, and I'll update my route planner to go that way. I'm not sure about the day's end in Bakersfield yet, but thanks also for the suggesgted rv park there.

Ellie,
We will be staying at the Wine Country RV Resort in Paso Robles on December 26 and 27th (it is near where 46 meets 101). Any chance you will be Paso Robles at the same time?

Just don't plan an extended stay at Lost Hills on I-5. This is not much more that a truck stop.
