Ok everyone, I am looking at a 2003 Ford F350 Crew Cab Dually 4x4 with the 6.0 PSD and automatic transmission. 80k miles, silver. Clean looking truck. Ford dealer is one I have bought from in the past and I trust. Have known the owner and sales manager all since grade school.
Any thoughts on the engine/trans/truck for pulling my 5er at close to 13,000 gross weight? I know I need more details such as pin weight etc. but just general thoughts.
Thanks for your input.

are you sure it is the 6.0 ?? I thought 2003 was still the 7.3??
If it is an early 6.0, I would ask them to run an "Oasis" report, and let you see the results. If they won't let you see the Oasis report, this is a red flag. Early 6.0 engines had lots of problems, you don't want to purchase a headache.
7.3 was/is a great motor, and probably gets a little better mileage when towing than the 6.0 liter gets.
I had a 2006 6.0 and now have a 2007 6.0 and have not had any problems, but when the 6.0 first came out, Ford had to "buyback" a large number of them due to head gasket and turbo problems.
(the Oasis report is a detailed report of services and warranty work Ford has done to the truck)

It is a later 6.0. Previous owner states the truck was no problem after some minor initial warranty fixes. He just wanted a new truck prior to the next motor change. He was pleased with the truck. I will ask for the Oasis report.
Thanks,

Well, we bought it today. I got it for about $2500 less than book and they gave me a decent trade on my old truck. I weighed my trailer when full and it is at about 12250# without fresh water. We do not boondock right now. The truck is rated at 12500. Not much play there but the bidget will in no way stretch farther. We do not want to be in a bind. Hey, if my payments are to high, I can't afford to use the 5er. Will use the truck for our first short trip with it next week.

Congrateds on the new truck, I'm not sure but I think you're under rating your truck. Check out your combined total gross and I think you'll have more than 12500. Like I said I'm not sure, but I know you'll enjoy what you've got. I've got some friends with the crew 350 and it's great for room and pulling. Have fun!!!

My brother-in-law has that model and his tow is much higher than that...check and be sure that you have your figures right. Congratulations on getting that tow for the 5ver! Let us know how you do down the road. Believe it or not we all like to hear back from folks that just get started to see how everything turns out. We all learn from this forum.

Here's a towing guide for you for the year 2003 that might help you out. But it looks like the rating you came up with is probably correct.
