Seem like a MTD for towing would be great. All the pull and stopping power you need and not as big as a HTD. So the wife can drive and it's not too big for driving to Walmart. Seem like you can get one a couple year old for less than you pay for a new Ford 450. What do you think

I would go to the Escapees Forum and start reading in both the MDT and HDT forums.  Both have very useful information on the pros and cons of both classes of trucks.

I've found a couple other websites through this site (thanks Howard!) that also have a good bit of information about MDT/HDTs. Both of these folks opted for HDTs after doing some comparisons, and they give the reasons why they made the decision they did:

One of the things that struck me was that going with an HDT is cheaper than going with an MDT. I would never have guessed that.

Hi Tim & Robyn Thanks for the info! Yeah, funny that the heavier truck is cheaper. Maybe because there are more of them???? I would like to stick with the smaller one - I think? I may stick with the pickup because of price. Just exploring and "dreaming". How about that Howard, do I get extra points for using the "dream" term???? Thanks again. Jack Mayer's website is very good at comparing MDT vs HDT.  A lot depends on your traveling style, etc, so his site is excellent at helping you decide one from the other.  We went the MDT route but of course the hubby would still like the HDT.  Boys and their toys.  We haven't yet done any traveling out west in the Big mountains so I may want more power when we try it there.  For us now, the MDT is great and easy to get around in.  I prefer it to driving our old 3500 dually.  The only problem we run into is finding a large parking space.  That was even a problem with the dually but a little more so now.  The best thing about the MDT is going down the road in air ride comfort and you don't even feel like the 5er is back there.

OK, we have decided to replace our F350 for a MDT.

One question. Where are folks with MDT's/HDT's getting their insurance?

We are not full time (yet!) and my local state farm agent will insure a Freightliner as long as I saw off an arm and a leg!! (although they do insure or 5th pretty cheaply, as long as we have our stick house)

No personal experience but the person I see most often recommended is Trese Hallet @ Farm & City, 1-800-331-1520. I'm pretty sure she was at the RV Life on Wheels I attended last year as well as being used by many SKPs.

We got out insurance from Miller RV Insurance, Fulltimer's insurance and auto insurance.  Their got better pricing from Progressive than AON and I bet they would be able to insure MDTs.  BTW, we're still drooling over MDTs - just have to wait until we officially retire and get a pay raise before we can buy one.

I'm Selling my kodiak 4500 and looking to move it quickly as I already have the other truck. $28,000. See it in the classified ads here on site.

For insurance I use RV explorer who carries National Interstate. In Ohio my rate for this truck full coverage is $441 a year.
