For me it was an easy decision to purchase an RV. At 47 and being layed off for almost 3 years I depleted almost all of my "security blanket". Working again I could start to look for a house that I would just be paying on for the rest of my life and never enjoy the word retirement. Yes it is only a 34' camper at the momment that I got for 1500.00 in mint condition but the money I will save for a couple of years only paying 450.00 a month in lot fees everything included outweighs the 1000.00 or more mortgage plus all the utilities and taxes. After a couple of years I can easily afford to upgrade into a used 5er and truck to pull it.
Yes an end plan is always a good idea...but even that end plan would include hiring a hauling company to move the 5er from point A to B for winter/summer.
I walked away from a house that was already paid for in Michigan... yes there were times that I looked back and said "what if", some tears, alot of happiness, alot of money spent in apartments to get my daughter into the best school districts in Nashville area, a move to Florida and then back to Nashville area this year and lived paycheck to paycheck... there are very few things I regret on the decision. Alot has to be said of hindsight is 20/20. My hindsight says it was all worth it!!

FLCoastalChick,
To paraphrase a famous line from this blog:
"I like your attitude"
You've got life figured out. Life goes on, stuff happens both good and bad. Your last line says, "My hindsight says it was worth it!!"
When it is all said and done.....you choose happy.
Good for you.

We will be testing the waters and renting our home for 7 months. We hand over the keys March 29th. Our home is paid off, the rents are fantastic and we like where we live. We rented it fully furnished so that we do not have the chore of moving. Tenants are responsible for yard and snow. Including above, renting was not a hard decision for us. We have been renting private cabins for 8 years using VRBO and we are comfortable with another family enjoying our home. I have gone through the entire home replacing toilet mechanisms, plumbing o-rings, dishwasher seals Etc. Ductwork was cleaned, furnace & AC serviced. In addition, I will purchase a monthly service plan from our utility company that covers my peace of mind. Local handyman will cover the rest if needed. It also helps that we own/manage other rentals and we our familiar with leases/leasing. This is our experiment and who knows what our future looks like. If anything, our home received the love necessary to place it for sale or for us to move back into.
