Yes, the long haul to SD is daunting financially, I figure at least $1,000 for gas alone, then I would have to move along before winter, probably all the way down to Texas to avoid snow, so all in all, a lot of miles and gas, into unknown territory. Nevada has a lot of attraction, it's close to Arizona where I grew up, and there are a lot of great RV spots there, like Quartzite and Sedona. I could rent a spot somewhere for a month or two, but any more info that you could send my way for establishing a residency would be great!

I didn't find SD to be any more difficult to get a driver's license than any other state, and the fellow I had for registering vehicles was extremely friendly and helpful. The folks at Alternative Resources were very helpful in letting me know what documents I would need so I was prepared when I got there, basically my certified birth certificate, social security card, the residency affidavit for full-timers and a receipt from a campground, RV park or hotel plus the $20 license fee. Since I took my maiden name after the divorce (therefor it was the same as on the birth certificate) I didn't need marraige license/divorce papers. SD is very friendly to full-timers. Just DON'T go to get your license the last couple day of the month or you'll stand in line with the procrastinators for a while! LOL
(I remember as a 14 year-old kid with a brand new driver's license being sent to the stand in line for my folks. Back then, ALL license plates expired in March, so everybody and their neighbor was there waiting in line. Most people who had a kid sent them instead of taking time off work to do it, or the wife went since very few women worked outside the home back then, the line of women and teenagers snaked all the way down to the end of the hall, doubled back to the middle of the building and out the door into the parking lot.)
Hina, what kind of mileage are you getting? I can make a round trip from TN to SD with my Tundra hauling a trailer for about $600 depending on gas prices, that's averaging about 10 mpg heavily loaded, and driving sedately at 55 mph (Illinois) or 60-65 mph (everywhere else). Round trip there to here would be about the same distance as one-way from CA to SD. Keep in mind you will get better mileage once you stop buying CA gas. (I hear this from friends who live out there) Plus you'll have a tail wind almost the whole way! LOL

Vanessa, yeah, this whole post- 9/11 being a woman who changed her name thing. Been gathering documents from 20 years ago, to prove who I really am. Geez. Maybe I should start wearing a beard and turban. Or maybe if I start speaking Spanish, they'll give me a driver's license with no documentation (oh, wait a minute, that's not SD, that's CA, where I am already!)
Mileage... I filled the tank, and took notes, looks like 5 mpg. I have the back of the SUV filled with flea market stuff, as well as bug out stuff, so that is hampering my mileage. But it is a big V10. I may have to lighten the load, but even so, that may only gain a mile or two.

My opinion is - It doesn't matter. I have only been back to SD once in the last six years - to renew my drivers license.
You can get medical care where ever you wish. In the last ten years I have had back surgery and a hip replacemet in Grand Junction, CO and rotator cuff surgery in AZ. Routine physicals in NH and CO.

We just got back from SD again. This time we had to do some more banking, get the cat her shots and do some other business (update wills, etc.) that we did not finish last time out in August. Coming from our former state of NJ I must say that everything and everyone in SD has gone smoothly and have been very helpful. We use Alternative Resources for our mail services and they have been great.
Registering the vehicles, getting our DL and registering to vote was easy as pie. We made sure to move all of our banking and all other business out of NJ so there is no question we are no longer living there and have no intentions of coming back (well, maybe to pass thru).

Those who choose SD over TX ... From my research, the only notable difference finanically is that SD charges a 3% sales tax vs. TX which charges a 6% sales tax. The bigger difference for us is that the medical facilities in Texas, i.e., Austin, Dallas, or San Antonia are much better ranked than those located in SD. Opinions?

We use Americas Mailbox and have been happy with them. We bank with USAA. Once we get to SD our ties to NJ will only be family. Just like you, we may just pass thru. Thanks for the information.

Jane, you might consider jumping to NV to change residency until you become mobile enough to do the SD thing. That would break your ties to CA except that you would still have to file taxes with the "right royal california dollar gestapo" for every dollar earned in the republik. There is nothing final about state residency. Did it many times while military. My wife got stopped here after about six months and the officer told her that she must trade in that AZ DL for one labeled CA. We didn't have an AZ address so she had to follow his instructions.

Jesse is is Box Elder staying in America's mailbox hotel. Said registration for truck & car (not new) was only $131.00 for both! He goes to get DL tomorrow am. Ill get mine in Sept when our Oregon job is over. He needed a copy of my DL to register our vehicles today, a texted photo worked!

Hi Mark, yes, I am looking into Nevada, it's just a hop and a skip, can be there in 4-6 hours. I would get the Nevada registration, license and everything ASAP, and actually spend time in the state. It's wedged between AZ and CA, which is familiar territory, plenty of cool places to go, people to see in this tri-state region, and a good baby step start!

Thanks for the info Sherry. We will be there in 2 weeks and plan on staying at their campground for at least one night but probably two nights depending on us getting everything done. We report for work at Mount Rushmore bright and early on the 2nd and can get into our provided campsite on the 1st! We are sad to be leaving family but after a terrible 1st workcamping gig at a KOA here in Indiana last summer and doing oil field gate guarding in Texas we are really looking forward to this new experience.
Let us know how it goes at the DMV getting his drivers license.

Oh dear typed a long reply but got a 404 server error when I sent. Ill try again.
A little bump getting his DL. We had sent our Passports in for renewal for my name change last year and his update. DMV wouldn't accept his Military ID as a valid 2nd ID "because they are not available to everyone." One would think a Federal ID with his picture on it would be acceptable to a state government but noooo. FedExed his birth certificate as he was able to get his DL yesterday.
He's on a plane on his way home right now and I can't wait to see him.
We'll be on the road in two weeks or less but still so much to do!!! Our new home will be parked in front of our home for the next week and HOA will just has to accept. I did call and alert them so that may put off complainers. We have very wide roads here so really lots of room.
