and two favourite camping with kids stories - out of the mouths of babes...
3 yo while strapping him into his carseat asks, "Where we goin' Mom?"
I answer: "We're going to Seattle!" He looks confused, then asks me,
"Who's Attle?"
4 yo gets off the boat and steps onto the river bank, noticing a pair of men's workboots sitting empty on the shore. We look up towards the bridge, and see a black blob. I asked dh if he thought it might be a bear; he answers, "No, I don't think so." 4 yo says, "Should we go up and see if it is, Dad?" DH points to the boots on the shore and says, "No, I don't think we should, son - look at what happened to the last guy who did that!". 4 yo looks at the boots, looks at his dad, and says, "Dad, should we go see if the feet are still in them?"

Well, we awoke to loud noises - and walked down to the campsite to find the guitar player on top of the picnic table, not strumming softly, but playing like he was Ted Nugent. His friends were gathered around the campfire, not singing sweetly, but dancing bare chested as if they were part of an Indian ritual.
This is kind of flip-flopped from that version, but we recently had something like that, but opposite LOL. Adam was playing his 6-string acoustic inside our trailer, we were both singing, but had the doors shut and windows closed. When it was time for a break, we opened the door to walk outside and found 1/2 the park right outside our door sitting perched at a picnic table! They had been secretly enjoying the serenade without our knowledge, and asked us to keep going LOL.

DH was a city boy when we started dating. His vacations were all hotel/motel trips. I grew up camping/backpacking, always outdoors. Soon after we were married I talked him into a hike on the AT, sleeping just out of sight of the trail. The first night I pitched the tent, showed him how to hang the food to keep the critters out and after dark we climbed into our sleeping bags. That is when I found out not only was he afraid of the dark, he thought every little noise was a bear. Every couple minutes he would pop up and yell "there's a bear!!!" I don't think I slept 30 minutes that night. My Big Bad Italian Construction Man still has problems with the dark and when I told him my first camp host job was at the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area he just said "thank goodness for a hard sided RV". I still like to hold his hand to go for a walk in the dark then sneak away. HEHE
Love him so much, he agreed to full time living with out a thought to wether or not there would be bears.

This is a tent-camping story that happened in 1974. My sister and I were in our 20's and single. We took a trip from Nebraska to the east coast in my brand new ORANGE and white Ford Pinto. We had a two-person ORANGE tent. One morning while we were still in the tent we heard some girls walking past talking. One of them said, "Oh, how cute! A car and tent to match!" It was all we could do to not laugh out loud.
