RV port homes

I have never heard the term "port home" before, but I took notice of an advertisement in Trailer Life mag with pictures of small homes with RV garages attached. I believe they were in Florida somewhere. Are these "port homes"? Sounds like a good idea for those of us who have trouble deciding on wether to give up the foundation home or not.

There are several sub divisions in Florida that feature port homes.

The first and most expensive we have seen is MT Olive Shores North, near Polk City, FL. they can be found here .

A little less expensive one and predecessor to the one above is called just Mt Olive shores. Some information can be found here

Hope this helps. Several years ago some Texans I knew were in the process of devloping a location there, but I don't know what happened.

Here is a bit more info on Port Homes in FL. Ethel and I gave strong consideration to this about three years ago. We looked at four or five such developements just west of Orlando both north and south of I-4. They were Lily Lake, Lake Ashton,Mt. Olive and Noth and another called Citrus Hills or something close to that.

The most expensive was The Great Outdoor Resort in Titusville, near Cape Kennedy. These were all nice, often based on a golf course, clubhouse, etc. which is just not our thing.

We ended up selling our larger house and buying a small home (1600 sq. ft.) right here in Jacksonville on a private road with no restrictions about boats, RVs, etc. We poured a slab, had a port built for our RV with electricity, water and sewer. We have great neighors that look after everything when we are gone for as much as 3 or 4 months.

This really works for us now. We may look for something somewhere else in the future. For now this works for us.

As workampers my husband and I worked in a similar community in Dade City, FL. Deeded lots with small homes and attached RV garages. Can't remember the name of the park but it was very nice. Perfect weather for "snowbirds" and not too hot in summer. Dade City and neighboring Zephyrhills have a small town feel and all the amenities.

We're currently staying at Rainbow's End, the Escapee's RV park in Livingston, TX. They offer deeded lots where folks put up a house and an RV port - sounds like what you've seen in FL. The lots are 1/3 to 1/2 acre. Very cool concept.

This is a bit further south than Dallas/Ft. Worth but it will give you an idea of cost and looks. Retama Village in Mission, TX in the Rio Grande Valley has lots of RV Port homes. Check out http://www.esperanzahomestx.com/communities/retama-village

The North Texas Airstream park (WBCCI members only) have a similar arrangement with S&B style homes with RV garages attached and Port homes. You can look at their website to get an idea of what they look like.

There are some in Crossville TN but they have tornados there.
At one time early in our full timing life we thought an RV port home would be a good thing. We toured some near Orlando FL (Citrus Hills?), but now (11 years later) not so much.
We bought a home in CO and added two RV sites. One for our motor home and one for friends.

We became interested in the RV Port homes and looked at the various communities. Seems pricey so we are now thinking just a very small base home with carport for the fifth wheel. The most reasonable community was in AL, but we do not wish to relocate eastward. We now live in central AR. Thinking of relocating to either north AR or somewhere west. Do you mind saying where you settled in CO? We love CO and visit there often. We mostly travel to the western U.S. We were thinking if we could find a good place we can afford where C of L is not too high and either buy or build very small home, low maintenance place in safe area because we are gone a lot, with place for camper. Input appreciated.

Closest to DFW that I've ever seen RV Port communities is at Lake Whitney.

We live in an RV Community in Whitney Texas. We are located on the lake and about 6 miles from town. Whitney is about 90 minutes from Dallas and an hour from Fort Worth. We are also 45 minutes from Waco.

If you go to Realtor.com and put in the zip code 76692 you will see the homes available within the community. There are also some available by owner. Each home has a port with full hooks up which is great because the MH is always ready to go. It also serves as a guest room when company arrives as our second bedroom is my office. We have been here since March of 2010 and love it. If you have more questions please send me a message.

Hey, Thanks, All. I am going to check out Lake Whitney. We had considered Texas. We have lived in Texas a lot, but did not want to go to south Texas to live. Had thought of something in North Texas with access to Dallas/Fort Worth. Sounds interesting. We know we really need to research and explore all options. I had seen Retama Village. Looks beautiful, but seemed a bit pricey for us. May look at it again. Did not know about Nevada. How are the winters in NV?

There is a beautiful CORP park 1 mile from Lake Whitney RV Community it is on the lake. Anyone coming this direction I would recommend it as your destination. You need to make sure the gate puts you on the lake side though and not at the Equestrian trails. There is an RV park in the community but the CORP park is much more spacious and scenic.

Whitney is a rural community and if you like tranquility then this would be a great place to consider. If you want to have Home Depot down the street this would not be your destination of choice. If any of you ever consider looking at the community I welcome you to contact me. We will be happy to share any information you are seeking.

Wanted to poke the thread and see if anyone else has found info about RV-Port communities?

we have 3 here in Alabama - 2 on the Gulf Coast (Expensive) and 1 in Northern AL (reasonable) For @ $110K you get a deeded lot, RV pad with port, Patio pad and a 1000-ish SF patio home - google Blue Heron Alabama.

That's nice, but I would rather base in either TX (looking at Rainbow's end) or somewhere in the Midwest.

Any ideas out there?

The weather is nicer down here in Mission TX.! I live in Retama Village and here is a RV Porthome for sale here.

To add to what Carol said.

We own property (RV lots with coach house) in Retama Village in Mission. There is nothing nicer in the Valley than Retama, and the prices are reasonable for what you get. Plus the winter weather is pretty good, usually. It is a nice place - worth checking out if you are looking for this type of property.

Ditto what Jack and Danielle say... Retama Village is definitely the nicest place in the Rio Grande Valley! That's why I live there.

I have looked at the Great Outdoors in Titusville, FL and a few things struck me... It's much more expensive. It's HUGE... And they didn't like motorcycles.

I think the advantage of Mission of Livingston and Lake Whitney is that the weather is nicer... Warmer in the winter and less storms in the summer, convenience of medical treatment -- both locally and Mexican dentists and convenience in terms of retail shopping.
