Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

Our New smart car

We got a smart to load behind the truck cab.....until we get the new truck Danielle will play "Linda" and drive behind.

It is a 2012 Passion coupe. Pictures are here.

We are keeping the Jeep for now, and leaving it out West. That is where it is in it's element!

Jack Congrats, we love our Smart Passion. Be prepared to answer a lot of questions. Once in Georgia pulled over by the police, officer walked up and said "MAN I DIDN'T EVEN THIS CAR COULD GO 65mph) Everyone thinks that the interior must be small, when they see me pop out at 6'2" they often take a double take....enjoy it.

Wow! Love it. Was just wondering two days ago if you were going to get a smart to go with new rig & truck. Going to have it painted to match?

looking good Jack! We will most likely do the same some day if we ever decide to give up the bike. Our truck is singled long and has plenty of room for a Smart with just some easy mods. Looking forward to seeing the new truck with the Smart loaded up.

Yes, we have the new 5th wheel and love it. It is the same basic floorplan, but we modified lots of little things, which add up to it being a big improvement for us. The 2010 5er is still for sale and I have lowered the price. Details are here.

On painting the smart - originally we intended to paint it to match the 5er and truck. But we like the silver, so we are reconsidering that.

Whoa!!!   Spare looks good!!!!

There just isn't any way that anyone can get me into one of those.  I guess I've just seen too many accidents in my day.

Oh, thanks, Gene.  Now you will have me really worrying.  With all the vehicles that I've seen literally destroyed in accidents and knowing some folks that have been killed on motorcycles, I guess I'll need to add all the motorcycle and Smart Car owners in my prayer list.  Please be careful.....all of you.

Terry, before you write off the smart as a killing machine you might want to do a little investigation. It is far safer than most vehicles on the road. That said, I still don't want to be in an accident in anything, including my semi truck.

They are pretty safe. Its basically an airbag waiting to blow....

I drove one around our town for an hour or so, it's a neat little ride. You can park them just about anywhere too.

We're looking at a Smart for a toad, too. One of my co-workers has one and hit a deer on the way to school one day. The collision popped several plastic panels loose or out, so it was loaded up on a truck and taken to the dealership where they put the panels back, checked it all over, and pronounced it good to go. The deer wasn't so lucky. She also warns us that it doesn't save any money on Wal-Mart trips.

We love our Smart convertible. DW drives it to work everyday. The heated seats are great in the winter. The AC will refrigerate meat. The navigation isnt as good as my tomtom and the DVD player only works when the car is stopped. Beginning design work on the bed for the truck. It won't be long before it will become our piggy back rather than our toad.

I really like Smart cars, and if I ever have a toad that's most likely what it would be. It's too bad they have to be detuned to bring them into the US in order to meet CA emission standards. A friend in Canada has one and gets 70+ mpg with it. And there are diesel Smarts in Europe that I hear are getting 100 mpg or better.

Diesel smarts get in the 60's and perhaps as high as 70-ish mpg. They do not get over 100 mpg. We average in the low 40's running around town. Only one time have we gotten below 40mpg - that was 39mpg. And I was driving that tank, all around town. I'm pretty hard on the little car - I drive it like a sports car. Anyone that says they are getting over 100mpg needs a new calculator. :)

Just curious... For all you Smart Car owners... How is the insurance cost relative to your previous daily drivers?

My dream toad is the new Jeep Cherokee Trail Hawk with the six cylinder. If they ever put the 3.0 liter diesel engine in it that is currently available in the Grand Cherokee and Ram pick-up, and couple it with that nine speed tranny, I'll be at the dealer the following week. I'm figuring on having just one primary means of transportation, and I want something that will go just about anywhere, through just about anything, and will get better than 8 mpg along the way.

I also considered that as an option. Considering that you'll have a plug-in, "gas station" at every RV park you take up residence in, it might not be a bad way to go. But I think that if I was going to go that small with my primary transportation vehicle, I might look into a toy hauler instead of a regular fifth wheel. If I went with the Jeep that I mentioned in a previous post, I certainly wouldn't trailer it.

Sorry that I was using the term "Toad" when what I actually meant was more of a "Scout". I doubt that I would be comfortable towing another vehicle behind a large fifth wheel. I'm really hoping that I'll be able to work something out that will allow me to have the rig relocated a few times a year without my having to purchase a large truck and towing it myself. This will all depend on how often we plan on moving around from place to place.

I have 2 of them.................Diesel variety. An '06 Passion with a glass sunroof and an '06 Convertible. They are a lot of fun to bomb around in. Kind of like a fast, street legal golf cart(well faster than a golf cart). I like the diesel ones much better than the gas ones. They are much safer than most think.

What year is yours? I like the choice of '05 or '06 because they're "Turbo Diesel". The newer ones are all gas.

You will only find a diesel in Canada. If you are Canadian, that is no issue. But if you reside in the US you are going to find it difficult to register a diesel here, since they are not certified for this country. It HAS been done, but it is very difficult. You will also find getting insurance on it difficult since it does not show up in their "books". And repairs must be done at independent mechanics, and parts have to be obtained from either Canada or Great Britain. Mercedes Smart centers will not touch the cars.

So, for most people the diesels are "more trouble than they are worth".

Wow......That's too bad because the diesel units are very good, reliable and very efficient. I never drove a gas one but the service guy at Mercedes up here in Regina said the diesels are a bit more torquey. Well about as torquey as a Smart car can be.
