Signing Up For The Forum

Well, I see that there are about 450 "Pending" members as of today (August 31, 2016).  These are a combination of folks that never got a confirmation email, folks that ignored the confirmation email, folks that never contacted us to let us know they couldn't get activated, and spammers hoping they could get in easily without having to confirm their legitimacy.

For those recently signing up, here is some information to help you get your membership activated.

When you register for the forum, you should get the following message on your screen:

Thank you for registering.
An email will be sent to you shortly to confirm your email address and activate your account.

If you do not receive a confirmation e-mail in the next five minutes please check that the e-mail was not intercepted by a spam filter.

If you are unable to retrieve your confirmation e-mail please contact the administrator of this forum and ask them to release your account.

You should receive an email from "Forum Signup Confirmation" with a subject of "Confirm your new account".

The email will actually be from this email address:  confirm"AT"activeboard.com so please make sure that your spam blocker or email system is set up to receive this email.

Once you have the email, just click on the link provided to confirm that you are the person that really signed up.  This is for your protection.

NOTE:  If the message on your screen has changed or the email subject line or address has changed, please let us know using our Contact Form (link below).

Now, if you never receive the confirmation email, that usually means the confirmation email got eaten by your spam control, firewall, or email system OR the email address you provided had a typo.  If that is the case, use our Contact Form to let us know you signed up and never got the confirmation email.  I'll then manually activate you and send an email back letting you know you are good to go.

Good luck and welcome!

Why do the confirmation emails get thrown into junk and spam folders?

The confirmation emails often go into spam because 1) many email systems are extra sensitive to emails with links in them, and 2) many email systems won't allow emails to get through (especially those with links in them) if the sending email address is not in your "contacts" list or has not been specifically approved to be allowed by the user.  So, when an email system sees something coming from @activeboard (which is probably not in your "approved" list) and it contains a link for you to click to confirm you signed up for this Forum, then the email system automatically puts it in "spam" until you have a chance to look at it and determine if it is legit.

Of course, we've experienced plenty of emails that have gone into our "spam" folders for no apparent reason, so sometimes there is no easily determined explanation. And sometimes the confirmation emails just seem to randomly disappear - who knows why.  :)

Again, if you don't get a confirmation email, just send us a message through our Contact Form, give us your username and the email address you used to sign up and we'll get you activated quickly.

When signing up for the Forum, please understand that we are trying to keep spammers and other troublemakers out as much as possible.  We're not always successful and a few slip through that we delete and ban as soon as we see problems.  However, in our efforts to protect our members, certain processes may delay activation of your membership.  For most people, membership is almost immediate - sign up, receive confirmation email, click on the link, activate account.

But here are some tips for the few that experience delays.

1.  Make sure your email address is correct when signing up.  If it's not, the confirmation email won't get to you.  I used to go through all the "Pending" members and see if there was a clear typo in the email address or something like that, but that process became overwhelming and I no longer can keep up.  So, I don't do that anymore and it's more important to make sure your email address is correct.

2.  You should receive your confirmation email within minutes of signing up.  If you don't get it, check your spam and junk folders.  If it's not there either, use our Contact Form and let us know.  Please provide us the User Name you signed up with and the email address you used (if different).  We can then get you activated quickly.  If you never receive your confirmation email and you don't contact us, then I'll eventually just delete you from our "Pending" roll.

3.  When we have a bunch of accounts in "Pending" status, I eventually go through them (maybe once or twice a year).  I review them to make sure they aren't going to be harmful to the community.  Some clearly are just spam and I delete and ban them immediately.  Some clearly are legitimate, and I give them a little more time to contact us, but if you never contact us, I have to delete those as well.  If I make a mistake and delete your legitimate account, you can always contact us and we'll get it straightened out very quickly.

So, there you have it.  Again, most sign up and get activated within a few minutes.  But we always have quite a few that stack up in our "Pending" members because of incorrect email addresses, failure to receive confirmation emails (might be your email system or it might be the Forum software's fault), or the lack of enough information in your Profile to make an easy decision on a manual activation.  In all cases, if you don't receive a confirmation email within five or ten minutes, a quick email to us through the Contact Form can fix the problem and eliminate delays.  Thanks for reading.  smile

Okay, so I just deleted all "Pending" members except those that attempted to sign up this month (August 2016).

I show 25 "Pending" members for August, 17 of which have yahoo email accounts.  Our software shows several successful confirmation emails sent, a few "service unavailable", and a couple "no such user" errors.  So, if you've signed up in August and don't have a confirmation email, let us know and we'll get you activated manually.

For those that attempted to sign up prior to August 2016, you'll have to go through the process again.  Sorry about that.

Again, it's very important that you Contact Us if you haven't gotten your confirmation email.  Send us the Username and email you signed up with, and we can get you activated so you can post and converse with this wonderful community.
